Hepatitis awareness on HBV & HCV 31st July

On Thursday, Sri Ramakrishna Degree College, Nandyal, organized a special program to observe World Hepatitis Day. The event was graced by Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao, M.D., Department of Clinical Microbiology, Government Medical College & Government General Hospital, Nandyal, along with Dr. Shanthi, College Director Mr. G. Hemanth Reddy, faculty members, and students.

The primary objective of this event was to raise awareness among students about Hepatitis. Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao delivered an informative session and sensitized the students about various aspects of hepatitis.

In his address, Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao stated: “Our main goal is to make you aware of hepatitis. If you gain proper awareness, you can protect not only yourselves but also your families and many others from falling victim to this disease. Lack of awareness is the main cause behind the spread of hepatitis.” He explained the two main types of hepatitis – Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) – and how their status (positive/negative) is determined through blood tests. He emphasized that vaccines are available to prevent the disease and that early intervention is key.

He further added:  “Our team provides treatment and support at all times. In 2024, the prevalence rate in Nandyal was HBV: 1.90% and HCV: 0.17%, which is higher than the state average. The main reason for this is lack of public awareness. Some people panic upon testing positive, but there is no need to worry – treatment is available. For those who test negative, vaccination is important to prevent future infections. Dr. Srinivasa Rao also informed that free testing facilities for hepatitis are available at their center. These programs are supported under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP). He shared a concerning statistic: “Across the country, out of 38,762 liver cancer patients caused by hepatitis, only 750 have recovered. The primary reason for this poor recovery rate is lack of timely awareness and treatment. This awareness campaign is a small step toward preventing such unfortunate outcomes.” Students interacted with Dr. K. Srinivas  Rao and clarified their doubts, gaining a better understanding of hepatitis.

College Director Mr. G. Hemanth Reddy expressed his gratitude to Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao for educating the students and stated:  “The main purpose of this awareness program is to ensure that each student is informed. If one student is aware, they can educate their family and community, thereby preventing the spread of hepatitis. Everyone should know about this disease and take the vaccine as a preventive measure.”

The event concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
