World Suicide Prevention Day 10th September

A program was organized at Sri Ramakrishna Degree College, Nandyal, on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day. The event was attended by prominent guests including Dr. Madhusudhan Rao, Senior ENT Surgeon and President of IMA Nandyal, and Dr. Arifa Bhanu, Neuropsychiatrist from GST Hospital. Also present were the Chairman of the college, Prof. G. Ramakrishna Reddy, faculty members, and students.

The program began with a keynote address by Prof. G. Ramakrishna Reddy, who stated that the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is conducting this awareness program across various colleges with the objective of educating students about suicide prevention. He emphasized that the primary goal of this initiative is to spread awareness and reduce instances of suicide among the youth. He expressed gratitude to the chief guests — Dr. Madhusudhan Rao and Dr. Arifa Bhanu — for taking time out of their busy schedules to address the students.

Prof. Reddy reflected on how, in today’s times, even minor problems are pushing young people towards suicidal thoughts and actions. He referenced the epic Ramayana, where Lord Rama, despite facing the major setback of being denied the throne and sent to exile, chose patience and positivity to move forward. Likewise, students should face challenges with resilience and courage, recognizing that their existence is valuable not only to themselves but to society as well. He urged students to spread awareness among their peers as a social responsibility.

Chief Guest Dr. Madhusudhan Rao addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of observing World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th every year. He pointed out that lack of awareness is the key reason for the increase in suicides, and that creating awareness is the main goal of this event.

He stated that every life given by God has a purpose, and one must strive to fulfill that purpose instead of giving up over trivial issues. He emphasized that many suicides are not due to major problems, but due to small matters — often just because someone said “no” or due to momentary disappointment.

Dr. Rao outlined three major causes of suicide:

  1. Expectations – Setting unrealistic expectations and losing hope when things don’t go as planned.
  2. Comparison – Constantly comparing oneself to others and feeling inadequate.
  3. Blaming oneself – Focusing on what one lacks and falling into a cycle of self-blame.

To prevent suicide, he suggested three approaches:

  1. Acceptance – Acknowledge and accept the problem.
  2. Adjustment – Learn to adapt and stay patient through challenges.
  3. Change – Continuously work on changing oneself to better cope with situations.

He encouraged students to consult medical professionals rather than resort to suicide when facing problems. He reminded them that they are the future of the nation, and such actions could hinder the country’s progress. He urged everyone to raise awareness and act responsibly.

Dr. Arifa Bhanu, another chief guest, expressed concern that while people discuss many things, mental health and suicide prevention are often neglected. In recent times, suicides have increased, mostly triggered by minor reasons such as failing an exam or receiving low marks. She emphasized that stress and hopelessness are driving these actions.

Dr. Arifa noted that suicide not only ends a life but also deeply affects the family and loved ones left behind. She called for a sense of purpose in life and urged students to act in ways that contribute to the development of society. She encouraged everyone to raise awareness and prevent such tragedies.

Both Dr. Madhusudhan Rao and Dr. Arifa Bhanu interacted with the students, answering their questions and clarifying doubts regarding mental health and suicide prevention.

Ms. Ratna Ramireddy, in her address, emphasized that the program was conducted to raise awareness around the theme: “Awareness, Early Support, and Building Resilience.” She pointed out that people today are relying more on Artificial Intelligence (AI) than their own thinking abilities, leading to a loss of reasoning, which in turn increases stress and suicide tendencies. She called for greater awareness and collective effort to reduce the incidence of suicides.

The guests of honor, Dr. Madhusudhan Rao and Dr. Arifa Bhanu, were felicitated with gratitude and respect by the college management.
The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Hemanth Reddy, NCC Officer Mr. Kamal Khan, NCC Vice Commander Ms. Lalitha Saraswathi, and Ms. Lakshmidurga. NCC cadets — both boys and girls — actively participated in the program.

The event began with a prayer, followed by a session where students shared their experiences related to NCC training and college life.

Speaking on the occasion, Colonel Alok Tirupati emphasized the vital role of youth, calling them the backbone of the nation. He posed thought-provoking questions such as, “What does NCC offer you? What are you learning from it?” He highlighted the significance of the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision and encouraged students to aspire not just to work under someone but to become job creators. He urged them to realize their goals with determination and perseverance.

Colonel Tirupati also spoke about entrepreneurship and leadership, stating that leaders must walk alongside their teams rather than simply delegate. He referenced Sudha Murthy, the first female engineer at Infosys, as an inspiration to all young women aiming to become self-reliant. He motivated students to make full use of their skills and knowledge, especially those pursuing courses like BCA, to achieve personal and national progress. He concluded by stressing the importance of spreading awareness gained through NCC for the betterment of society and the nation.

Colonel Joby Philips spoke next, sharing insights about candidates from Bihar, Jharkhand, Guntur, Tirupati, Vijayawada, and Kakinada who are attending national-level UBSC camps. He emphasized that such camps are valuable opportunities to score higher marks and that C and D certificates obtained through NCC are beneficial in future exams. He encouraged students to prove their abilities in comparison to visiting cadets, and to ensure that all guests feel welcomed and comfortable.

He also stressed the importance of learning languages other than Telugu, given that cadets from across the country would be attending. He introduced the EXPA program, where former NCC cadets from Bangalore and Hyderabad would be conducting theoretical and practical classes, guiding students on how to lead their lives, differentiate between right and wrong, and set future goals. He emphasized that one’s behavior reflects one’s character.

College Director Mr. G. Hemanth Reddy praised the dedication of the NCC cadets, noting that while most students spend their holidays leisurely, NCC cadets choose to be in camps, learning important life skills. He highlighted that these camps teach students how to interact with new people, adapt to different environments, and work as a team. He encouraged the students to showcase the values and culture of their college, and to take care of visiting cadets from other institutions, ensuring they have a positive experience.

Mr. Reddy also stressed that this is a national-level program, and it is a privilege for students to be selected. The participating cadets have worked hard and are steadily moving toward their dreams.

As a token of appreciation, the college felicitated Colonel Alok Tirupati and Colonel Joby Philips with honors.
The program concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

The program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of literacy in building an inclusive, informed, and progressive society.

Director Mr. G. Hemanth Reddy, in his address, emphasized:

Literacy is essential for enjoying human rights and freedom, and for creating a society free from discrimination. It lays the foundation for individuals to develop harmonious relationships, acquire knowledge, skills, and values. Nations with higher literacy rates tend to experience better healthcare, employment opportunities, and overall development, while those with low literacy levels struggle with backwardness, unemployment, and violence. Literacy is not a luxury, but a necessity for national progress,” he stated.

Mr. Ratna Ramireddy explained:

“Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen effectively in order to understand the world around us. In today’s digital era, it also includes the ability to learn and use technology, which is known as digital literacy. Promoting education for all is the core message of this day. Education is a basic right, and everyone should have access to it. Most importantly, that education should contribute positively to society.”

Mr. Palle Sathik, in his remarks, said:

International Literacy Day is observed every year on September 8. One of the primary reasons many countries lag behind in development is due to illiteracy. Literacy empowers the youth, enhances their abilities, and paves the way for national development. Education for women, in particular, is extremely important. Therefore, every individual must pursue education for both personal and societal growth.”

The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Principal K.B.V. Subbiah addressed the gathering, saying:

“Every year, on September 5th, we celebrate Teachers’ Day on the occasion of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday. In everyone’s life, the first teachers are mother and father, followed by the Guru. Mātṛ Devo Bhava, Pitṛ Devo Bhava, Āchārya Devo Bhava—these three are most important in our lives. Respecting them is our duty. They teach us valuable lessons, stand by us in all aspects, and guide us towards progress. As a teacher myself, I too wish that you all listen to your teachers, follow their guidance, and live in a way that benefits society.”

Senior lecturer M.V.V. Mohan Rao shared his views, saying:

“Respecting and following a teacher is not as easy as it seems. The depth in a teacher’s words is not easily understood by everyone—it is grasped only by a few. Education is not just about learning, it must be useful for society. Every teacher wishes for that, and I hope you will also live in such a way.”

Sravani Kumari expressed:

“From the time I joined this college, I have been learning many new things from Principal Sir, Chairman Sir, Hemant Reddy Sir, and all my fellow teachers. In a way, all of you are like teachers to me. Understanding a teacher may be difficult, but every student must try to understand them. Teachers play a very significant role in everyone’s life—they help us achieve success by imparting knowledge. On this Teachers’ Day, I made all the students take a pledge to respect their teachers.”

Mandla Ratna Ramireddy said:

“The reason I am here today as a teacher is because of the teachers who guided me throughout my life. My first teachers were my parents, from whom I learned many values. Later, my teachers, colleagues, and even students have taught me valuable lessons. I thank them all, because of them I am in this teaching profession today.”

Palle Sadiq remarked:

“Every teacher wishes to see their students in great positions and contributing to the development of society. You must move forward in the right direction as your teachers expect, respect their guidance, and live in a way that is useful to society.”

Srikant expressed his gratitude, saying:

“Because of the inspiration of one of my teachers, I am standing here today as a teacher. I sincerely thank him on this occasion. Every person has such teachers in their lives. My love for English turned into my passion because of one such teacher. His way of teaching motivated me, and because of him, I was able to pass the DSC exam and secure a teacher post. For that, I am grateful to all my teachers. I wish you too will listen to your teachers and achieve great positions in life.”
